Khabarovsk Statement (2012 APEC Meeting of Ministers Responsible for the Environment)



APEC Ministers and senior officials responsible for the environment, convinced that "environmental protection and the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, ecosystems and biodiversity are essential foundations for achieving sustainable economic and social results for the APEC region," made statements in five areas: biological diversity, use of natural resources, water management and transboundary watercourses, transboundary air pollution and climate change, green growth.

Selected Commitments:
Some statements for the five focus areas include the following: 1) Conservation of biological diversity - support for the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, resolve to strengthen protected areas systems in the APEC region, working within economies and through transboundary arrangements; 2) Sustainable use of natural resources - welcome several statements or declarations made on topics such as mining, forestry, and sustainable management of ecosystems and fisheries; 3) Sustainable water management and transboundary watercourses - encourage cooperation among APEC economies to conduct research on water and water pollution management; 4) Addressing transboundary air pollution and climate change - stress the need for closer cooperation concerning research on weather and climate; 5) Support for green growth - reaffirm commitments to advance shared green growth objectives
