MOU on the Conservation and Management of Marine Turtles and their habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia

The Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation and Management of Marine Turtles and their Habitats of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia (IOSEA Marine Turtle MOU) is a CMS instrument which aims to protect, conserve, replenish and recover marine turtles and their habitats, based on the best scientific evidence, taking into account the environmental, socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the signatory States.

A Conservation and Management Plan will be implemented with focus on reducing threats to these species, conserving their critical habitat, exchanging scientific data, increasing public awareness and participation, promoting regional cooperation, and seeking resources for implementation. The Plan currently contains 24 programmes and 105 specific activities.

Coverage of the MOU will include marine turtles residing in the waters and coastal states of the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia and adjacent seas. These include the following species:
