Implementation Agreement Technical Assistance on: Preparation of a National REDD+ Mechanism for Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Philippines (National REDD+ System Philippines)



The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has been implementing projects to promote economic, ecological and social development in the Philippines on behalf of the German Government since the 1970s. Their work in the Philippines focuses on the areas of peace and security, the environment, rural development and climate change.

This Technical Assistance on the Preparation of a National REDD+ Mechanism for Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Philippines (National REDD+ System Philippines) provided by The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) exemplify the existing solid cooperation between the Philippines and Germany in the areas of common concern such as the environment and climate change.

Scope of Cooperation:
The scope of this technical assistance covers: (i) Establishment of a national implementation and coordination system for REDD+, (ii) Development of financing/benefit sharing mechanisms for REDD+, (iii) integration of ecological, social and governance standards (safeguards) in implementation of REDD+, (iv) Forest land use planning and REDD+ implementation in selected areas, and (v) Awareness building, information and knowledge management.

Latest Activities:
1. Held Partner Event in 3rd APFW entitled “Forest landscape Restoration and Revival of Forestry Industries in the Philippines”;
2. Capacity building and position building on REDD+ in the UNFCCC/CoP 21 on 30 Nov - 11 Dec 2015 held in Paris, France;
3. Provided support to the Philippine Delegation during the UNFCCC CoP 21 in Paris.

Next Steps:
1. Review and update the Philippine National REDD-Plus Strategy (PNRPS)
2. Development of the National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS)
3. Propose inclusion of the NMRC options in the agenda item of the Cabinet Cluster on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
