The ASEAN Working Group on Forest Management (AWGFM) was created during the 18th Meeting of ASOF that was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on 6-8 August 2015. It undertook the works of the ASEAN Experts Group on International Forest Policy Processes (AEG-IFPP); the ASEAN Regional Knowledge Network on Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (ARKN-FLEG); the ASEAN Forestry Extension, Education and Training Network (ASEAN FEET Network), and the ASEAN Mangrove Network (AMNet). Malaysia serve as the lead country. 

The Working Group aims to support ASOF and the AMAF in decision-making by providing specific policy-oriented research results and policy analysis on forest management; support the implementation of the strategic thrusts, action programmes and activities identified in the Strategic Plan of Action for ASEAN Co-operation in Forestry, 2016-2025, and the Work Plan for Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) in ASEAN, 2016-2025, through the Strategic Plan of Action for ASEAN Co-operation in Forest Management developed by the Working Group; and promote sustainable forest management of all types of forest, including protection, restoration, afforestation and reforestation, and increase efforts to prevent forest degradation.

It will continue the modality of AEG-IFPP on the rotation of hosting to ensure the continuation of its activities.

Commitments:
- Participate in the deliberations and discussions on guidelines, policies, and programs of the working group The Plan of Action (POA) for ASEAN Cooperation on Forest Management (2016-2020) was endorsed by the 20th ASOF on 27-28 July 2017 and it specifies the action programmes per strategic thrust under the SPA for ASEAN Co-operation on Forestry related to forest management. The details are in the section on the ASOF.

Updates

The working group endorsed to ASOF the Manual for Assessing Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) Implementation in ASEAN Member States and it was approved for adoption in August 2018. The manual was pilot tested by the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam in 2017. The Philippines presented its results at the meeting of the AWGFM in May 2018 at Champasak, Lao PDR. Moreover, the Philippines participated substantially in the development and crafting of the Voluntary Code of Conduct on Imports for Forest and Timber Companies in ASEAN in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 30-31 October 2018. This was tabled for deliberation and approval/adoption at the 2019 Meeting of ASOF.
