The ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry (AWGSF) is a transformation of the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN), a government driven social forestry network in Southeast Asia, with its main goal to strengthen ASEAN Cooperation in Social Forestry through the sharing of information and knowledge. The AWGSF also provides support to the ASEAN Multi-Sectoral Framework on Climate Change (AFCC) by being the Ad-Hoc Steering Committee on Climate Change and Food Security (AHSC-CCFS).

The Working Group has extended its objectives and scope of work from the initial ten years of the ASFN that linked the government forestry policy-makers directly with other network members from civil society, research organizations, academia, private sector and experts of related fields---all who share a vision of seeing social forestry grow in ASEAN Member States.

Updates

The working group finalized and endorsed to the 22nd ASOF the following deliverables for 2019: (1) Regional Community Forestry (CF) Assessment Tool and the (2) Regional Agroforestry for Climate Change Resilient Landscape Manual. Previously, it had finalized and endorsed to ASOF the "ASEAN Guidelines for Agroforestry Development." The ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry endorsed these guidelines during their 40th meeting in 2018.
Some Philippine accomplishments under the AWGSF are:
- Issued FMB Technical Bulletin No. 20 or the "Enhanced Guidelines and Procedures in the Preparation/Updating of the Community Resource Management Framework (CRMF) and Five-Year Work Plan (FYWP) for the CBFMA."
- Conducted regional and national people's organization (POs) congress/ summits. These serve as an opportunity for POs to showcase good practices and accomplishments in implementing various projects. They also serve as venues to discuss related policies and formulate policy recommendations relevant to CBFM as a strategy to achieve SFM.
- Creation of the CBFM National Working Group, a multi-stakeholder body which will consolidate, assess and monitor CBFM activities/ initiatives and support the CBFM Steering Committee.
